Above, an automated speed camera enforcement warning sign and, below, the speed camera on Route 109 in the town of Washington, CT.
If you’ve driven through Middletown or Marlborough recently, you’ve likely noticed the automated speed cameras that result in a $50 fine for traveling in excess of 10 mph over the posted speed limit.
As of January 2026, 11 Connecticut municipalities have received state approval to install or operate automated speed cameras and five of them – Washington, Middletown, Marlborough, Beacon Falls, and Greenwich – are actively issuing tickets.
Speed cameras are coming to 15 locations in West Hartford, to 11 school zones in Hartford, to the Silas Deane Highway and Berlin Turnpike in Wethersfield – and to Milford, Stratford, Fairfield, Stamford, and New Haven.
While these cameras are designed to slow down traffic and reduce accidents, they have also fundamentally changed how evidence is gathered after a collision. If you were injured in an accident near one of these camera zones, this technology could be the key to proving negligence.
Here is what you need to know about speed cameras and your Personal Injury claim.
Do Speed Cameras Only Give Out Tickets?
No. While the primary function of these devices is to issue automated municipal citations ($50 for a first offense) to the registered owner of the vehicle, they serve another purpose in personal injury lawsuits.
These cameras capture high-resolution images and video of traffic flow. If a crash occurs within the camera’s field of view, that footage can show:
- Pre-crash speed: Was the other driver traveling 15 mph over the limit?
- Reckless behavior: Did they swerve or accelerate sharply?
- The point of impact: Exactly how did the collision occur?
Using Camera Footage to Prove Liability in CT
Connecticut is not a “no-fault” state like New York. In order to receive compensation for personal injuries, including medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering, we must prove that the other driver was negligent.
Speed camera footage is powerful, unbiased evidence. Unlike witness testimony, which can be inconsistent or influenced by stress, video footage offers a concrete timeline of events.
How We Use This Evidence:
- Countering Insurance Defenses: Insurance adjusters often try to argue that you were partially at fault for the crash. Clear video showing the other driver speeding can dismantle these claims.
- Validating Injury Severity: Footage of the impact can demonstrate the force of the crash, supporting claims of significant injuries (like whiplash or traumatic brain injuries) that insurers might otherwise dismiss as minor.
Immediate Action Required: Evidence Preservation
There is a crucial limitation to this technology: video footage is not stored forever.
Municipalities have varying retention policies, and footage can be overwritten in as little as 72 hours if it is not formally requested.
If you were in an accident in a Connecticut municipality with speed cameras, acting quickly is vital. Our firm can send a spoliation letter to the town or city to compel them to preserve any footage from cameras near the scene before it is permanently deleted.
