Fatalities on Connecticut roads and highways are highlighted in DOT signs along CT highways

The number of fatalities on Connecticut roads through the first eight months of 2024 is being highlighted in electronic signs on highways as part of a state Department of Transportation initiative launched in September.

“Have you seen our highway signs? The number of fatalities on Connecticut roads keeps growing, with 224 lives lost in crashes this year alone. Every week, the numbers rise, reminding us how urgent it is to drive safely,” the Connecticut Highway Safety Office said in a Sept. 9 Facebook post.

The numbers posted are from Jan. 1 through Aug. 31, making 2024 the second deadliest year on Connecticut roads in the past six years, slightly behind 2022 with 237 deaths through the first eight months of year.

“We decided to start posting the number of fatalities on the signs because we wanted to put that number directly in front of the drivers,” Josh Morgan, a DOT spokesperson, said in a Hartford Courant story. “We see these numbers every week, and they keep increasing. Our goal is to make the public aware of the ongoing crisis.”

Motorcycle & Pedestrian Fatalities at Highest Level
In Six Years in CT

According to a CT Mirror story, deaths involving motorcyclists are at the highest level in at least six years. Both this year and 2021 had 51 motorcycle accident-related deaths through the end of August, with other years ranging from 37 to 45 deaths.

The data shows that pedestrian deaths are also the highest in at least six years, with 48 deaths as of Aug. 31, which is 10 deaths more than the next highest year, 2020, which had 38 pedestrian deaths through the end of August.

“As pedestrian-involved crashes rise on Connecticut roads, older pedestrians are particularly vulnerable due to factors like longer crossing times, diminished eyesight, and difficulty judging distances. Drivers must be extra cautious, especially at night,” the Highway Safety Office said in a Sept. 22 Facebook post.
